Hilton Anaheim, the largest hotel in the Anaheim Resort District and one of the largest in the region with 1,574 guestrooms and 100,000 square feet of meeting space, announced that it has launched a mattress recycling initiative that calls for the removal, deconstruction and recycling of 2,589 used Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattresses, made expressly for Hilton properties worldwide. The project began on January 4 and is slated to conclude on February 16, 2017. It’s Hilton’s largest hotel mattress recycling initiative in the United States to date.
To complete the project, Hilton Anaheim partnered with Manassas, Va.-based Global Sustainability Solutions—one of Hilton’s mattress recycling partners that has also managed a large scale recycling project at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport, and Serta—to spearhead the removal of approximately 306,894 pounds of solid waste. An estimated 95 percent of the mattress and box spring components will be recycled and repurposed into new products such as tools, tempered flooring, oil filters and carpet padding.
“Our company has an impressive history of environmental stewardship and Hilton Anaheim is doing its part to live up to those values by reducing the amount of solid waste going into our landfills,” said Hilton Anaheim General Manager, Shaun Robinson.
In Compliance with California Law
The initiative is in compliance with California law SB 254, which requires the recycling and recovery of solid waste/mattresses.
Janet Harrington, Chief Operating Officer at Global Sustainability Solutions, said, “We are committed to clear and consistent communication with the property, Serta, transportation and recycling facilities in order to keep the project running smoothly and to avoid disruption to the schedule and the hotel.”
Hilton Anaheim is Green Certified under the California Green Lodging Program, and a recent recipient of Anaheim Chamber of Commerce’s 2016 Green Business of the Year Award.
“Hilton is committed to reducing waste generated by our properties, and programs such as this one allow us to deliver against that commitment,” said Judy Pines, Director Sustainability and Responsible Sourcing at Hilton. “As our strategic partner, GSS will help us to achieve that objective at properties nationwide.”
