Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem, and Ramón Vilalta of Spanish firm RCR Arquitectes have been named the 2017 Laureates of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. The prize, one of architecture’s most prestigious distinctions, is awarded each year to recognize significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through architecture.
The trio will be officially recognized at the State Guest House, Akasaka Palace, in Tokyo on May 20, where they will receive $100,000.
Previous Laureates include Interior Design Hall of Fame members Shigeru Ban (2014), Richard Meier (1984), Frank Gehry (1989), and Robert Venturi (1991). Last year’s Laureate, Alejandro Aravena, a pioneer of socially minded architecture, curated the Architecture Section of the 2016 Venice Biennale.
